I'm surrpised they had places like this in Sweden during those years, just seems so much an American phenomenum for it's time.

Neat blog!

Actually, the "Frölunda Torg" mall was built in 1966 and was by its completion the biggest mall in Europe. It is obviously not the biggest one today, but it has expanded over the past decades and there are over 100 stores located there today. You can find their current website here: http://www.frolundatorg.se/

Thanks for the info! My city's first mall had to open around 1969, though it was on the far-east side outside of town. A mall would eventually open up in Toledo a few years later. At one point, we had four enclosed malls in the vincinity, but one had closed up a few years ago, and a few others are on their last leg, and one apparently is doing fine and dandy under the "Westfield" branding.

The all-in-door-shopping concept is perfect for a cold and ever weather changing country like ours. They probably understood that quite quickly. If I ever happen to get to Luleå I'll be sure to visit Erskine's shopping mall!
